Glencore Exports Rare French Wheat Cargo to U.S. Livestock Feed Market
In an unusual transaction, Swiss commodities giant Glencore Plc is transporting a shipment of French wheat to the United States, marking only the second occurrence of such an export within the last 13 years. The vessel Union Erwin was loaded with soft wheat at the bustling port of Rouen, France, last week and is currently en route to Wilmington, North Carolina. Manuel Gaborieau, who oversees grain traffic at the port, confirmed the shipment details. Glencore has chartered the vessel to carry approximately 45,000 metric tons of wheat, as indicated by a ship lineup accessed by Bloomberg. According to Matt Ammerman, a commodity risk manager at INTL FCStone Inc., the transaction likely took place earlier in the year when the difference in prices between French and American wheat was relatively small. Notably, the U.S. last imported French wheat two years ago, with the last record prior to that dating back to 2002, according to data from the U.S. Department of Agriculture. This development underscores significant international trade dynamics in the agricultural sector.
