What Crew Members Say About Lauren-Hansen

On April 11, 2018, the barge 'Lauren Hansen' encountered a significant incident as it grounded off the coast of Tiwi Island. The vessel was en route from Darwin to Elcho Island when it reportedly experienced a malfunction with its autopilot system. This malfunction caused the ship to veer uncontrollably, ultimately grounding on a shoal near Melville Island around 2:30 a.m. After remaining stuck for over 12 hours, the 'Lauren Hansen' was finally dislodged at approximately 2:40 p.m. as the tide rose. Following this ordeal, the vessel returned to Darwin for a thorough inspection of its hull. Fortunately, there were no reported injuries, water ingress, or pollution resulting from the grounding incident. In light of these events, the Australian Transport Safety Bureau has initiated an investigation, expected to wrap up by the end of the year, during which all involved parties will be interviewed.
