Daring Rescue: LÉ James Joyce Saves Sailor from Sinking Yacht

Feb 10, 2017 11:04

A dramatic rescue unfolded on February 9, 2017, when the Irish patrol boat 'LÉ James Joyce' came to the aid of a 26-year-old sailor whose yacht was rapidly sinking. The incident occurred 16 nautical miles southeast of Roches Point in Cork Harbour under challenging sea conditions. After experiencing a failure in his navigation equipment, the yachtsman issued a mayday call as water began to flood his vessel. Responding to a distress request from Mine Head Coast Guard Station at 4:20 p.m., the 'LÉ James Joyce', which was on a Maritime Security and Defence Patrol, swiftly arrived at the scene. The crew launched a Rigid Hulled Inflatable Boat (RHIB) and successfully rescued the single-handed sailor from his precarious situation. He was brought on board the RHIB and subsequently transferred to Coast Guard Rescue 117 via winch. To ensure his safety, the man was airlifted to Cork Airport by a rescue helicopter from the Waterford Coast Guard, and he was then transported by ambulance to Cork University Hospital for treatment of mild hypothermia. With the operation concluding at 6:30 p.m., the 'LÉ James Joyce' resumed its important patrol duties. The mission commenced at 9:20 a.m., following an urgent request from the Italian Maritime Rescue Coordination Centre. Positioned 32 nautical miles northwest of Tripoli, the LÉ James Joyce first attended to a vessel carrying 106 migrants, before proceeding to assist a second vessel that housed 164 migrants, many of whom required immediate medical care. Defence Forces medical personnel, alongside the Red Cross, promptly provided treatment to those in need. Despite their efforts, the mission saw the unfortunate loss of one male and four female migrants, with one female confirmed to be heavily pregnant. The surviving migrants received essential support, including food, water, and medical treatment as necessary. Ultimately, all individuals, along with the deceased, were scheduled for transfer to the Italian Navy's ITS Bersagliere, which will ensure their journey to a safe port.
