Tragic Accident Claims Life of Crew Member on 'Leander'
In a heartbreaking incident at sea, a crew member in his 40s from Hammerfest lost his life aboard the fishing vessel 'Leander' off the coast of Vardø on June 22, 2020. The local police received notification of the tragedy around 11 a.m. The vessel was reported to be anchored outside Hamningberg on the Varanger Peninsula for several hours before it made its way to Vardø just before 10:30 p.m. Upon its return to the quay at Vardø, authorities promptly initiated an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the accident. The Øksnes Kystfiske AS, the operator of 'Leander', expressed profound sorrow over the incident and is providing support for the family and fellow crew members. There were a total of 10 crew members on board at the time of the accident, with the nine remaining crew receiving assistance from the crisis team in the municipality of Vardø. The Norwegian Maritime Directorate has also been routinely notified about this unfortunate event.
