The bustling Port Elizabeth has officially introduced a state-of-the-art bunkering vessel valued at R200 million, designed to transport fuel and various supplies to ships traversing its waters. This development marks a significant milestone in the city’s ambitions to capitalize on the oceans economy. The MT Lefkas, an oil tanker recently added to the South African Ships Register, previously flew the Liberian flag but will now proudly display the South African ensign. This move is a strategic effort to strengthen South Africa’s position as a key player in the shipping industry, aligning with the national government’s extensive Operation Phakisa initiative. Having docked yesterday morning, the MT Lefkas will operate as a floating fuelling station, catering to all vessels navigating through Algoa Bay. The vessel, owned by the Greek shipping firm Aegean, is not only set to enhance maritime services but also to generate up to 500 job opportunities, significantly contributing to the local economy.
