US Coast Guard and Royal Bahamas Defence Force Rescind 88 Haitians from Overloaded Sail Freighter
On January 21, 2022, a joint operation by the US Coast Guard and the Royal Bahamas Defence Force resulted in the successful rescue of 88 Haitians from a dangerously overloaded sail freighter near Great Inagua, Bahamas. The incident unfolded when a forward-deployed MH-60 Jayhawk helicopter from Coast Guard Air Station Clearwater, part of Operation Bahamas, Turks and Caicos, spotted the vibrant blue and red sail freighter approximately 23 miles west of Great Inagua. Upon identifying the situation, the Jayhawk crew swiftly directed two Royal Bahamas Defence Force vessels, HMBS 'Leon Livingston Smith' and HMBS 'Nassau', to the freighter. These vessels facilitated the safe transfer of the 88 migrants to secure conditions. A second Jayhawk crew was also dispatched to the site to provide additional support during this critical operation. For more details and visuals from the rescue, visit the Coast Guard news report.
