Engine Failure Leads to Allision with Fairway Buoy in Weser River

Mar 03, 2014 10:35

On March 2, 2014, the vessel 'Lianne,' en route from Sölvesborg, experienced a critical engine failure while maneuvering to enter the port of Nordenham at the lower Weser. During the crucial foremidday hours, the ship was attempting to turn around in alignment with the incoming tide when it unexpectedly drifted into a fairway buoy. This collision resulted in the buoy being displaced approximately 400 meters from its original location. Despite the crew's desperate efforts to stabilize the situation using emergency anchoring, they could not prevent the allision. Fortunately, they managed to restart the engine and successfully docked at Rhenus S quay at 11:30 a.m. Meanwhile, the displaced buoy posed a hazard in the fairway until it was restored to its rightful position by a buoy layer from the Port Authority in Bremerhaven. Following the incident, local police from Brake initiated an investigation into the actions of the Lithuanian captain, who subsequently faced legal repercussions in the form of a fine.

Coaster 'Lianne' Grounds in Limfjord: Grain Transport Incident

Mar 19, 2012 09:12

On the morning of March 18, 2012, the coastal vessel 'Lianne' encountered a significant setback while navigating the Limfjord. The ship, which was carrying a cargo of grain from Västerås to Nykøbing, ran aground on a sand bar situated in the main shipping lane just east of the Aggersund Bridge. Notably, a pilot was aboard during the incident, yet the vessel still found itself stranded. Preliminary assessments suggested that there should have been sufficient water depth in the area, prompting speculation regarding potential sand shifts on the bottom of the fairway as a contributing factor to the grounding. In an effort to assist the 'Lianne', a sand dredger was summoned to remove the sand beneath the ship, thereby facilitating its refloat; however, this initial attempt proved unsuccessful. Maritime officials are planning another rescue operation, slated for the high tide on March 19, to further attempt to free the vessel.
