Heroic Rescue by Tanker in the South Pacific Saves Solo Sailor
On February 27, 2020, the tanker 'Lindanger', while navigating from Timaru to Pecket, achieved a remarkable rescue operation, saving 67-year-old French sailor Thierry Deroy from his aluminum yacht 'No Comment'. The incident unfolded on the fringes of the Chatham Islands, approximately 400 miles southeast of New Zealand, where Deroy's vessel had capsized and suffered dismasting. Facing severe water ingress and the realization that his yacht was beyond repair, Deroy activated his distress beacon on February 26, prompting the 'Lindanger' to alter its course swiftly to reach him. Following his rescue, Deroy was taken toward Punta Arenas for further assistance. This adventurous sailor had embarked on his journey from Guadeloupe on October 20, 2019, intending to participate in the La Longue Route 2018. His extensive preparatory efforts over three years were anchored in the port of Bono, located in the Gulf of Morbihan, where numerous competitors also made their final arrangements for this legendary expedition.
