On March 10, 2023, in the late evening, a dramatic medevac operation unfolded when a crew member aboard the LNG tanker 'Aqwas Ibom' required urgent medical attention. The vessel was on its way from Saint-Nazaire to Bonny, approximately 110 nautical miles west of La Rochelle. At 7:30 p.m., the Maritime Rescue Coordination Centre (MRCC) in Etel received an alert regarding the condition of a 49-year-old sailor who had fallen critically ill. Following a consultation with the Maritime Medical Center (MMCC) in Toulouse and emergency services (SAMU 17), a medical evacuation was deemed necessary. The MRCC promptly dispatched a Dauphin helicopter from the naval base in La Rochelle to the location of the LNG tanker. The rescue operation concluded successfully at 9:10 p.m., when the patient was hoisted up and subsequently transported to a hospital in La Rochelle for treatment.
