Tanker Defends Against Pirate Assault in Nigerian Waters
In a dramatic encounter on November 6, 2018, the LNG tanker "River Niger" found itself under attack from pirates while navigating the waters off Nigeria. The incident occurred at coordinates 03 55N 006 56E, roughly 30 nautical miles south of Bonne in the Bight of Bonny. The pirates opened fire on the vessel; however, the crew's quick thinking and swift maneuvers allowed them to evade capture by accelerating away from the attackers. Fortunately, the crew emerged unscathed from the harrowing experience. Following the assault, the "River Niger" successfully docked at its intended destination of Bonny and resumed its journey on November 7, setting sail towards China.
