A tragic accident occurred on the night of September 30, 2023, when a 48-year-old Filipino crew member aboard the tanker 'Gladiator' fell into the sea near the Detached Mole in Gibraltar. The man, who was reported missing at approximately 9:30 p.m., was seen climbing the steps on the northern side of the mole shortly before the incident. A swift multi-agency response was initiated, involving the Royal Gibraltar Police (RGP), Gibraltar Defence Police, Customs officials, the Port Authority, and the Gibraltar Fire and Rescue Service (GFRS). According to Gibraltar Broadcasting Corporation (GBC), the initial operations included two divers from GFRS, alongside backup divers, who managed to recover the body within minutes, with the grim discovery made around 10:30 p.m. Following the recovery, crime scene investigators were deployed to the location, and the coroner was notified to further assess the situation. Fortunately, preliminary assessments indicated that no foul play was involved, and an investigation remains underway.
