Oil Spill Incident in Liepaja Following 'Lyra' Allision
On October 26, 2019, at approximately 6 a.m., the cargo vessel 'Lyra' experienced a serious mishap as it docked in Liepaja, arriving from Odense amidst fierce winds and turbulent seas. During the docking process, the ship collided with a pier, resulting in a breach on its starboard side where a fuel tank was located, which led to an oil leak. In response, the Environmental Board of the State Environmental Service quickly intervened, deploying booms around the affected area and initiating an oil recovery operation. Approximately 100 liters of heavy fuel oil were released into the water at Freeport's berth 51A. However, favorable wind conditions aided the anti-pollution efforts, limiting the spread of the spill along the shoreline and breakwater. By the afternoon of the same day, oily patches covered about 500 to 600 square meters of the water surface, but effective containment measures were taken, and the fuel was partly absorbed. The crew of the 'Lyra' worked diligently to transfer fuel from the compromised tank to a secure bunker tank, effectively bringing the situation under control. The Accident and Incident Investigation Bureau commenced an examination of the accident's circumstances. After necessary repairs and assessments, the 'Lyra' resumed its journey on November 1 at midnight, setting sail towards Tarragona with an estimated arrival date of November 13. Cargo Ship Fletum Faces Hull Damage Off Portland
The cargo vessel Fletum has encountered a significant challenge as it anchored off Portland with a punctured hull. Fully loaded with 4,800 tonnes of ammonium sulphate, the ship has been seen listing to starboard while situated just outside Portland Harbour. This emergency arose during its transit from Antwerp, Belgium to Casablanca, Morocco, compelling the Fletum to divert and seek assistance on the night of January 13, 2012. In response, the Maritime Coastguard Agency deployed an aircraft to monitor the vessel's approach to the Dorset coastline, ensuring there were no indications of pollution leakage. Early on January 14, the Fletum managed to enter Portland Port, where it underwent repairs for roughly six hours before resuming its voyage.
