The Mackenzie-Rose: Crew Feedback and Vessel Data

On May 31, 2026, at approximately 9 p.m., the towboat 'Mackenzie Rose' experienced a power failure while actively pushing a fleet of 15 loaded coal barges along the Ohio River. The event raised concerns from the U.S. Coast Guard regarding the potential for the drifting tug and barges to collide with a nearby bridge. Responding promptly, the Ravenswood Fire Department dispatched nine firefighters who launched a boat to establish communication with the 'Mackenzie Rose' crew, assess the vessel's situation, and pinpoint its location. Meanwhile, additional personnel were stationed at Riverfront Park, ready for further action. Thankfully, another tugboat arrived at the scene and successfully assisted in securing the towed barges to the Ohio shoreline close to Portland, Ohio. All emergency responders cleared the area just before 11 p.m. The incident prompted a coordinated response that included the Ravenswood Police, Jackson County and Meigs County sheriff’s offices, Ripley Volunteer Fire Department, and the West Virginia Department of Highways.
