Damen Begins Construction of World's Largest Diamond Mining Vessel

May 21, 2019 08:31

Damen Shipyards, the renowned Dutch maritime construction company, has officially commenced the creation of an extraordinary offshore diamond mining vessel for De Beers Marine Namibia, a subsidiary of the De Beers Group. This 50/50 joint venture with the Namibian Government marks a significant partnership in the diamond industry. The contract for the vessel, which was awarded in February 2019, aims to enhance offshore diamond mining operations in the rich waters off Namibia's coast. The steel cutting ceremony, signaling the launch of this impressive project, took place recently at Damen’s shipyard located in Mangalia, Romania. Once completed, the vessel will span an impressive 177 meters (577 feet), surpassing the current largest diamond mining ship, Debmarine’s 174-meter Mafuta. Designed according to the Marin Teknikk MT 6027 specifications, this ship will not only hold the title of the largest but will also be the most technologically advanced diamond recovery vessel ever built. Key features include a state-of-the-art dynamic positioning system (DP2) utilizing a seven-thruster propulsion system, powered by six generators, each generating 3230 eKW. The total investment for this groundbreaking project is estimated at $468 million, marking it as the most significant single investment in the marine diamond sector to date. The construction is projected to last approximately two years, with Damen Shipyards in Mangalia set to deliver the vessel platform before it embarks on its journey to Cape Town, South Africa, on its own keel. Following the installation of mission equipment in Cape Town, the vessel is anticipated to commence diamond production in the second quarter of 2022.
