Barge Drifts in Laccadive Sea After Tug Loses Towline
On September 26, 2016, the tugboat 'Magellan II' encountered a significant mishap in the Arabian Sea when it lost its towline due to a malfunctioning winch while towing the 180-meter barge 'B42'. Following the incident, the barge, which had a towline measuring 1000 meters at the fore and 900 meters at the aft, went adrift. By September 27 at 2:30 a.m., the last recorded position of the barge was 12° 51'N latitude and 073° 49'E longitude, approximately 57 miles west of Mangaluru. The ill-fated convoy had departed from Cochin on September 23, and the loss of the tow has raised concerns within the maritime community.
