Viking Supply Ships Transitions Fleet to Norwegian Registration
Viking Supply Ships (VSS), a prominent supply shipping company based in Sweden, is shifting the registration of four of its Anchor Handling Tug Supply (AHTS) vessels from the Danish International Ship Register (DIS) to the Norwegian flag. This significant move was announced on a Thursday by CO-Sea, Denmark’s largest maritime trade union. As part of this transition, all established and long-term crew members aboard the affected vessels will be presented with new employment contracts under the Norwegian system, effectively replacing their existing DIS contracts. The vessels involved in this transition include Loke Viking, Njord Viking, Magne Viking, and Brage Viking, with the changeover scheduled to be completed within the first quarter of 2017. This strategic decision by VSS aims to enhance operational efficiency by consolidating its fleet under the Norwegian flag, allowing the company to better compete in the evolving offshore market landscape. In conjunction with this transition, the Danish Metals & Maritime Department (DMMA) has organized a meeting slated for January 5, 2017, bringing together representatives from the Norwegian trade unions, Viking Supply Ships, and stakeholders to discuss the specifics of the employee transition process. This proactive engagement aims to ensure a smooth transition for all parties involved.
Magne Viking Achieves Milestone as First Vessel to Meet IMO Polar Code Standards
In a landmark achievement, the AHTS Magne Viking, owned by Viking Supply Ships A/S, has become the first vessel to fully comply with the new International Maritime Organization (IMO) Polar Code. The announcement follows a comprehensive survey conducted by DNV GL in collaboration with the Danish Maritime Authority. Morten Mejlænder Larsen, who oversees Arctic and Polar activities at DNV GL Maritime, expressed his enthusiasm, stating, "Having closely monitored the development of the Polar Code, it is a significant milestone to certify the first vessel that adheres to its requirements." Viking Supply Ships, with extensive experience in Arctic operations amidst harsh and icy conditions, recognized the importance of the Polar Code and proactively implemented the necessary updates to both the vessel and its equipment. This process included thorough documentation to demonstrate compliance. Initially introduced on January 1, 2017, the IMO Polar Code is an essential regulatory framework for all SOLAS vessels operating in Arctic and Antarctic waters. It supplements existing safety requirements outlined in the SOLAS convention and environmental protections mandated by MARPOL. DNV GL will issue the Polar Ship Certificate to vessels that satisfy these new standards on behalf of their Flag Authorities.
