Intruders Board Cyprus-Flagged Tug's Dredger Near Nipa Island

Apr 26, 2019 10:22

In a concerning incident that occurred on April 24, 2019, at 05:10 a.m., the Cyprus-registered tugboat "Union Topaz" was engaged in towing the dredger "Magnor" approximately five miles west-northwest of Nipa Island, Indonesia, when two intruders managed to board the dredger. According to reports, two wooden boats were spotted accompanying the dredger during the event. The tug’s master responded quickly by illuminating the backhoe dredger with a spotlight, prompting the assailants to flee aboard their vessels. Fortunately, the crew of the "Union Topaz" remained unharmed and there were no reports of stolen items. Following the incident, the pilot aboard the tug promptly communicated the details to Singapore’s Vessel Traffic Information System (VTIS). In response, VTIS initiated a navigational safety broadcast and alerted the relevant authorities, including the Singapore Police Coast Guard, the Republic of Singapore Navy (RSN), and Indonesian authorities, to ensure maritime safety in the region.

The MAGNOR, a groundbreaking backhoe dredger constructed by Ravestein, is set to take the title of the largest and most efficient backhoe dredger globally, with a forthcoming delivery to Boskalis. Designed for versatility, this impressive vessel comes equipped with two substantial deck cranes, enabling seamless changes to crucial components such as the boom, stick, and bucket. Inside, the MAGNOR boasts a fully outfitted accommodation for a crew of eight, alongside a spacious deck workshop and ample storage for machinery and equipment. With its formidable 40-meter long spuds, it will achieve dredging capabilities of up to 32 meters deep.
