Magsenger 19 Rescued After Engine Blackout Near Hamburg

Nov 18, 2013 13:33

On November 17, 2023, at 3:50 a.m., the bulk carrier 'Magsenger 19' was successfully towed into Hansa Port following a harrowing incident the day prior. The vessel suffered a significant engine blackout while approaching the bustling port of Hamburg, causing it to veer dangerously to port near the Airbus Yards in Finkenwerder before swerving to starboard. Caught in the strong flood current, the situation became critical as the ship was at risk of running aground on the banks of the Rüsch Canal. Initially, two tugboats that were stationed to assist the incoming vessel were unable to make contact, but one managed to push against the port side bow while the other secured a line to the stern. Despite their efforts, the vessel continued to drift perilously. In a last-ditch maneuver, its crew executed an emergency anchoring procedure to halt its drift. It was not until the arrival of four additional tugboats—the 'Fairplay X', 'ZP Bulldog', 'Bugsier 9', and 'Hunte'—that the situation was resolved, allowing the 'Magsenger 19' to be safely towed into the port.
