LNG Carrier Malanje Launched at Samsung Heavy Industries
A significant naming ceremony took place on August 17 at Samsung Heavy Industries' Geoje Island shipyard in South Korea, marking the unveiling of two new LNG carriers commissioned for joint ownership by NYK LNG (Atlantic) Ltd., Mitsui & Co. Ltd., and Teekay Corporation. These vessels, set to transport liquefied natural gas (LNG), will operate under a charter with Angola LNG Supply Services, which is based in Houston, Texas. The first vessel was named Soyo by Mr. Kobayashi’s wife, while the second vessel received the name Malanje from Mr. Glendinning’s wife. Structurally, Soyo and Malanje are owned in equal shares of 33% by NYK LNG (Atlantic) and Teekay, with Mitsui holding a slightly larger stake at 34%. Anticipated delivery for Soyo is slated for August 30, with Malanje following close behind on September 30. These vessels are the first and second in a series of four sister ships, all under construction at the Geoje Island facility. The fleet will facilitate the transportation of LNG from Angola to international markets under long-term charters that span 20 years.
