On October 23, 2013, the U.S. Coast Guard initiated an extensive multi-agency search operation for a 55-year-old captain who was reported to have fallen overboard from the motor vessel "Taipower Prosperity II". The incident took place in the Philippine Sea near the Republic of Palau during the vessel's transit from Port Kembla to Taichung. The Coast Guard's Joint Rescue Coordination Center in Honolulu received an Inmarsat-C distress signal relayed from the Rescue Coordination Center in Australia, concerning the missing mariner, who was the ship's master. Following this alarming report, the Joint Rescue Coordination Center in Honolulu relayed vital information to Coast Guard Sector Guam. The sector quickly mobilized to identify and dispatch available search resources in the area. After careful examinations of the vessel’s compartments failed to locate the captain, the ship executed a 180-degree course reversal to facilitate the search operations. Several assets are actively engaged in the search efforts. These include the "Taipower Prosperity II", the Pacific Patrol Boat "Remeliik" from the Republic of Palau, and the AMVER vessel "Ocean Symphony". Aerial operations are being conducted by an Australian P-3 Orion aircraft, along with a U.S. Navy P-3 from CTF-72 and an SH-60 helicopter crew operating from the USS "Preble". Additionally, a Coast Guard HC-130 Hercules aircraft has been dispatched from Air Station Barbers Point to enhance the search efforts. The mission continues as agencies collaborate to locate the missing captain.
