Cargo Ship Collision: Anangel Courage Strikes Fishing Vessel in East China Sea
In a dramatic maritime incident, the cargo ship 'Anangel Courage' collided with a Chinese fishing vessel on August 11, 2016, at approximately 5:30 a.m. The event occurred around 35 miles northwest of Uotsori Island, the largest uninhabited isle of the Senkaku Islands, located in the Okinawa Prefecture. The 11th Regional Coast Guard Headquarters swiftly responded to a distress call from the freighter, dispatching both a patrol boat and an aircraft to the incident site. Heightened vigilance from the Japanese Coast Guard in Naha, Okinawa, had been in place since August 5, triggered by a surge in activity by Chinese government vessels and fishing boats in the sensitive waters surrounding the Senkakus. Although the fishing vessel remained unaccounted for and is feared to have sunk, six crew members were successfully rescued by the Japanese Coast Guard. Search and rescue efforts are ongoing, as eight additional crew members from the fishing vessel are still missing. At the time of the collision, the 'Anangel Courage' was navigating from Nantong to Hedland.
