Daring Rescue at Sea: 'Maran Gas Posidonia' Aids Stranded Crew
On May 10, 2016, at approximately 6 p.m., the 'Maran Gas Posidonia' played a crucial role in a Search and Rescue (SAR) operation initiated by the Maritime Rescue Coordinating Centre (MRCC) after a distress signal was received from the northern waters of Mauritius. This call was traced back to a vessel named 'Aquila', which was found adrift northeast of St-Brandon. The crew aboard the 'Aquila', composed of five Mauritian nationals, encountered dire circumstances due to an engine failure that left them stranded. The vessel's owner promptly alerted the authorities, prompting the MRCC to relay the information to the National Coast Guard (NCG) stationed in St. Brandon. Responding to the emergency, the NCG activated an automatic identification system to locate nearby ships. Around 7 p.m., the 'Maran Gas Posidonia' commenced its search efforts. The skilled captain was able to establish communication with the beleaguered crew of the 'Aquila'. Despite facing challenging weather conditions, rescuers launched an extensive operation that spanned several hours. Compounding the situation, the 'Aquila' had lost power to its lights due to a drained battery, further complicating visibility for the rescue team. Ultimately, the diligent crew of the 'Maran Gas Posidonia' succeeded in bringing the distressed crew members aboard safely. They returned to Mauritius on May 12, relieved and unharmed, albeit without their lost vessel.
