On February 6, 2018, the presence of oil stains near the bulk carrier 'Marcos Dias' raised alarm in the port of Santos. The vessel was docked at Warehouse 22 pier, situated in the Outeirinhos area on the right bank of the complex, where it was in the process of unloading a salt cargo. Initial estimates suggest that approximately 30 to 50 liters of oil had entered the estuary. It is suspected that the fuel was leaking from the ship’s tanks due to cracks in its hull. In response, technicians from the Companhia Docas do Estado de São Paulo (Codesp) activated an emergency service plan at the port. The Brazilian bulk carrier ABML Eva has officially resumed its operations following a significant incident involving the vessel Marcos Dias. After departing from Santos on January 13, the ABML Eva is back in service, while the Marcos Dias was previously anchored at Santos before its departure to Ilha da Conceicao near Rio de Janeiro. This crucial journey was undertaken on January 12, culminating in its arrival on January 13 at 11:30 AM. The collision, which occurred on December 31, 2012, at 6:30 PM, was attributed to a propulsion failure aboard the Marcos Dias (IMO: 9070565). At that time, the vessel was en route from Usiminas' cradle terminal 5, carrying 40,000 tons of iron ore from Rio de Janeiro. Despite attempting to secure itself by deploying two anchors, the Marcos Dias drifted uncontrollably and collided with the ABML Eva, causing damage to the port side foreship and impacting the P4 Portainer at Libra Terminals' warehouse 37. As a result of the incident, the release of the Marcos Dias was postponed while an investigation is underway, evaluating the damages inflicted on both the carriers and the terminal's infrastructure.
