Engine Room Blaze Contained on 'Maria Felisa' Ferry in Surigao Strait
On February 1, 2026, the 'Maria Felisa', a ferry operating in the Surigao Strait, experienced a significant engine room fire shortly after departing Benit Port in San Ricardo. The incident occurred around 1:30 p.m. as the vessel was en route to Lipata Port, carrying 92 passengers and 33 crew members. Immediate action was taken by the crew who initiated firefighting protocols upon detection of the fire, which was caused by excessive heat in the lube oil filter leading to machinery overheating. The Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) was alerted and promptly dispatched Fast Patrol Boat 151 and High Speed Boat 026 to offer assistance. With the fire successfully contained and extinguished, the 'Maria Felisa' was left disabled and adrift approximately 0.85 nautical miles from Bilaa Point in Barangay Punta Bilar, Surigao City. To further support the rescue operation, the ferry 'Binibining Liloan', a sister ship to 'Maria Felisa', joined in the efforts. The Coast Guard also deployed various floating assets to ensure all onboard were safe. The tow operation was conducted with the 'Maria Vanessa' assisting the 'Maria Felisa' back to Lipata Port under the watchful eye of the Coast Guard. By about 3:58 p.m., both vessels successfully arrived at Lipata Port, allowing all passengers to disembark without incident. The City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (CDRRMO) of Surigao City, in conjunction with the PNP Maritime Group and the Bureau of Fire Protection, conducted a thorough assessment of the passengers. Three crew members did sustain minor injuries during the fire; a 25-year-old oiler from Arayat, Pampanga, and a 22-year-old apprentice from San Simon, Pampanga both suffered first-degree burns and were transported to Caraga Regional Hospital. Another apprentice from Bustos, Bulacan, experienced smoke inhalation but opted for first aid instead of hospital transport. The PCG is collaborating with the Maritime Industry Authority (MARINA) to investigate the incident and has reported it to the MARINA Regional Office XIII for further inquiry.
