On February 1, 2026, the 'Maria Felisa', a ferry operating in the Surigao Strait, experienced a significant engine room fire shortly after departing Benit Port in San Ricardo. The incident occurred around 1:30 p.m. as the vessel was en route to Lipata Port, carrying 92 passengers and 33 crew members. Immediate action was taken by the crew who initiated firefighting protocols upon detection of the fire, which was caused by excessive heat in the lube oil filter leading to machinery overheating.
