Stranded Vessel Martin H Successfully Towed to Bodø After Distress

Dec 10, 2013 10:28

On the evening of December 3, 2013, the fishing vessel 'Martin H' encountered a critical emergency, reporting significant water intake along with a complete engine failure that left its power systems nonfunctional. With five crew members on board, urgency compelled the Coast Guard to initiate a rescue operation, deploying both a helicopter and a rescue boat. The tug 'Norman Earl' mobilized from Reine, leveraging favorable wind conditions to accelerate to over 14 knots. After two and a half hours of navigating to the distress location, the Coast Guard's tug successfully made contact with 'Martin H' to establish a towing connection. During the towing process, the crew of 'Martin H' collaborated with the tug 'Norman Jarl' to help maintain course by utilizing bow thrusters and rudders. However, the challenging conditions caused by strong winds pushed 'Martin H' off course to starboard, putting substantial strain on the towing equipment. The final stretch of the tow proved particularly treacherous, as a lifeboat was summoned to assist under worsening weather conditions that included wind gusts reaching up to 53 knots and nearly zero visibility. At one point, the team had to pause for almost an hour, hoping for improved circumstances before proceeding. Ultimately, the operation culminated successfully at 10:30 a.m. the following day, with 'Martin H' safely arriving at the port of Bodø.
