The ro-ro vessel Vectis Eagle set sail from Kiel on November 25, just before midnight, embarking on a journey towards Gijon with an estimated arrival time of November 29 at 5 p.m. The vessel's departure comes as repairs are underway for the damaged lock in Kiel, which is anticipated to be operational again by November 26. Technicians discovered that the guiding rails of the gate sustained damage during the incident involving the Vectis Eagle. To expedite repairs, a replacement gate was successfully floated in with the assistance of the SFK tugboat Holtenau. Vectis Eagle Collides with Kiel Canal Lock Gate
On November 24, 2014, the cargo vessel "Vectis Eagle," while making its way from Muuga to Gijon, encountered a mishap at the Kiel Canal in Holtenau. Just before noon, the ship collided with a lock gate, which subsequently led to the closure of the Northern Lock as the gate sustained severe damage and will need to be replaced. The vessel was assisted by port tugs "Holtenau" and "Kitzeberg," successfully being towed to the East Shore Port shortly before 2 p.m. The incident was attributed to a malfunction in the propeller, which failed to respond adequately to commands for the ship to go full astern and halt its entry into the lock. The impact caused the vessel's prominent "groot cross" bow to deeply penetrate the lock gate, leading to significant flooding of water tanks.
