Cargo Ship Collision in the Sea of Marmara: What Happened
On the night of May 20, 2015, at 9:40 p.m., a maritime incident occurred in the Sea of Marmara when the cargo vessel m/v 'Verlaine' (IMO: 8841694) collided with the 'Maryam M', which was being towed by the tug 'WJT-3500' (IMO: 7719686). Both vessels were traveling in the same eastern direction; however, the 'Verlaine' was moving at a higher speed and failed to navigate adequately around the slower-moving convoy. Following the collision, the 'Verlaine' made its way north of Saraylar on Marmara Island and dropped anchor. At the time of the incident, the 'Verlaine' was on a journey from Abu Qir to Tuzla, while the 'Maryam M' was being towed from Algeria to Istanbul (Ambarli). This collision serves as a reminder of the complexities and risks present in busy maritime routes.
