Historic Battleship Iowa Sets Sail on Its Final Journey
The iconic battleship Iowa, a legendary vessel that spent years in the U.S. Navy's mothball fleet, commenced its final voyage on Sunday, May 20, 2012. Departing from San Francisco, this mighty battleship is on its way to its new home as a museum in the Port of Los Angeles. Four powerful tugboats are orchestrated to assist the Iowa, known as one of the largest battleships ever constructed by the United States, as it navigates under the celebrated Golden Gate Bridge and out of San Francisco Bay. Among the fleet of tugs is the impressive 7,200-horsepower Warrior, which is set to tow the tremendous ship down the California coastline, with an expected arrival in Southern California by Thursday. The Iowa is slated to open its decks for public tours in San Pedro on July 7, transforming into a major attraction for the community’s waterfront.
