Freighter Encountering Emergency Maneuver in Westerems
On February 25, 2020, at approximately 8 a.m., the freighter 'Merita' faced serious rudder complications while navigating the Westerems, located to the west of Borkum Island. The vessel was at risk of running aground amidst turbulent conditions, including winds reaching up to nine Beaufort and wave heights between six to seven meters. 'Merita' had departed from Papenburg at 1:30 a.m. and was en route to Liepaja when the incident occurred. The Central Command for Maritime Emergencies in Cuxhaven promptly coordinated the rescue efforts. In response to the tricky situation, the crew executed an emergency anchoring maneuver, successfully restoring the ship's ability to maneuver. The tugboat 'Waterstroom' was deployed to escort the 'Merita' until it exited the Ems area. By 1 p.m., the Central Command for Maritime Emergencies concluded its response operations.
Timber Cargo Issue Resolved for 'Merita' in Kiel
On April 4, 2014, the bulk carrier 'Merita' found itself redirected to Kiel by the local water police due to improperly secured timber cargo on its deck after it had navigated through the Kiel Canal. The vessel had departed Jaunmilgravja Ostas Kompan in Riga on April 2 at 5 p.m. On its journey, 'Merita' was halted in the Kiel Canal locks at Holtenau around 3:40 p.m. Although the captain initially intended to address the cargo issue in Rendsburg, limited crane availability at the local communal port led to instructions for the ship to dock at East Shore Port in Kiel for the necessary repairs. 'Merita' successfully berthed at 8:50 p.m. and continued its voyage on April 5, setting sail at 3 p.m. heading towards Ijmuiden, with an estimated arrival time of April 6 at 8 p.m.
Vessel Grounds in Rostock Port Due to Engine Trouble
