Ferry Incident in Holmestrand: Engine Failure of 'Kalkøy'

Sep 28, 2016 11:27

On September 27, 2016, the ferry 'Kalkøy' encountered engine difficulties while operating in Holmestrand. The vessel, which had recently arrived from Langøya, experienced an engine stall at approximately 1 p.m., leaving it anchored just off the wharf. In response to this situation, a tugboat was dispatched to assist in maneuvering the ferry to the quay. By 4 p.m., the St. Vincent-Grenadines-registered tug 'Boa Sund' (IMO: 7500798) arrived on the scene, providing support by pushing the distressed ferry back and forth across the fjord while the crew worked on troubleshooting the engine issues. Ferry Kalkøy Involved in Allision with Barge at Langøya

Jun 24, 2016 10:48

On June 23, 2016, at approximately 11:30 a.m., the ferry 'Kalkøy' collided with a moored barge at Langøya. The incident resulted in minor injuries for one female passenger, who sustained bruises after falling due to the impact. Thankfully, after undergoing a medical evaluation, she was able to drive herself home. In the aftermath, the 'Kalkøy' proceeded to dock in Holmestrand for inspections, where local police began to interrogate the captain, suspected of responsibility for the accident. Investigations continued in Holmestrand, with authorities conducting routine sampling and interviewing additional witnesses on-site. Fortunately, there were no indications of alcohol or drug use involved. The timeline for the 'Kalkøy's' return to service remains uncertain. The ferry was en route to Horten for further inspection. Initially, the passenger ferry 'Hørte' was dispatched to assist, but a larger replacement ferry from Drammen was called in and became operational by 7:30 p.m. The barge, which was carrying a cargo of 25% ferrous sulfuric acid supplied by Kronos Titan, was assessed by crews from Buksér og Berging and Veritas. The inspection revealed that the barge had sustained a dent in its hull, located well above the waterline, posing no immediate risk of leaks or spills. To prevent any contamination, measures were taken to unload the barge promptly.
