MV SININ, Maltese-Flagged Bulk Carrier, Secures Freedom After $4 Million Ransom
The Maltese-flagged bulk carrier MV SININ has been successfully released after being held captive by pirates in the northern Arabian Sea since February. Sources indicate that the vessel, which was reportedly attacked on February 12, 2011, is now en route to Colombo, Sri Lanka. During a conversation with Somalia Report, the pirate group leader, identified only as Gurey, confirmed that the initial ransom demand was set at $5 million. However, negotiations concluded with the vessel's owner agreeing to pay approximately $4 million for the safe release of the crew. Gurey emphasized that all 23 crew members are unharmed and that they possess sufficient supplies for the journey to their next destination. On Saturday evening, the ship’s owner ensured that the MV SININ was equipped with adequate fuel and security measures prior to its departure from Somalia. An official from the Indian High Commission in Nairobi corroborated the report of the MV SININ's freedom, stating that the ship is currently making its way to safer waters. The bulk carrier, with a deadweight tonnage of 52,466 dwt, was hijacked approximately 350 nautical miles east of Masirah, Oman, while it was traveling from Fujairah, UAE, to Singapore. Owned by Tehran-based ISIM SININ Limited and managed by Iranohind Shipping Company Limited, also from Tehran, the release negotiations were completed earlier this week, allowing the ship to set sail soon after the ransom was delivered. Diplomatic sources suggest that the MV SININ is expected to reach Sri Lanka within the next five days.
