Saving Lives at Sea: Medivac Operation Near Durban

Sep 26, 2016 13:26

On September 23, 2016, the Maritime Rescue Coordination Centre (MRCC) activated the NSRI Air Sea Rescue team for an urgent medical evacuation off the coast of Durban. The operation was prompted by the health crisis of a 59-year-old Filipino chief cook aboard the vessel 'Skelt,' who suffered a myocardial infarction. Crew members onboard administered initial treatment based on guidance from a local physician. To ensure swift and safe evacuation, it was determined to wait until the 'Skelt' was within closer proximity to Durban. At 4:50 a.m. on September 25, a 15 Squadron Oryx helicopter took to the skies, reaching the vessel approximately 20 nautical miles offshore by 5 a.m. The rescue team successfully extracted the man and transported him to Saint Augustans hospital, landing safely at 5:20 a.m. He has since been transferred to Entabeni Private Hospital and is reported to be in stable condition.
