In a heartbreaking incident at Wajima Port on September 19, 2011, the 19-ton tugboat "Kitamaru No. 12" capsized, resulting in the tragic drowning of its two crewmembers. The accident occurred at approximately 7:35 a.m. while the tug was assisting the cargo vessel "Miura" in its departure from Wajima Port Marine Town. During the operation, both the captain and the deckhand were thrown into the turbulent waters. Immediate rescue efforts were launched by the crew of the "Miura" and regional Coastguard patrol boats, which located the crewmembers near the breakwater. Despite the quick response from firefighters and emergency personnel, the individuals were unfortunately confirmed deceased upon recovery. The "Miura" had docked at Wajima on September 18, and the two tugboats were in the process of maneuvering it away from the quay on the morning of the incident. The Kanazawa Local Meteorological Observatory reported that significant weather warnings were in effect at the time, with wave heights reaching up to 3 meters and wind speeds of 10 meters per second, creating perilous conditions at sea.
