In a remarkable rescue operation, a US Coast Guard helicopter successfully medevaced a 48-year-old crew member from the fishing vessel 'Morning Peace' approximately 130 miles southwest of Dutch Harbor, Alaska, on September 17, 2020. The emergency began unfolding at 1:32 p.m. on September 16, when the Coast Guard received a distress call regarding a crew member displaying symptoms consistent with appendicitis. After consulting with a Duty Flight Surgeon, a medevac was deemed necessary. Initially located 530 miles south of Unalaska Island, the Morning Peace made its way toward Dutch Harbor overnight to shorten the distance for the rescue. The Coast Guard's MH-60 Jayhawk aircrew, based in Cordova, took off at 8:30 p.m. and successfully reached Dutch Harbor at 7:21 a.m. the following morning after a brief refueling stop in Cold Bay. At 11:02 a.m., the aircrew hoisted the ailing individual aboard the helicopter and promptly transferred him to awaiting commercial medevac services in Dutch Harbor for further transport to Anchorage. At the time of the rescue, conditions on the scene included a temperature of 48 degrees Fahrenheit, sustained winds of 31 mph, and visibility of 5 miles.
