Tragic Accident at Port of Tauranga: Body Recovered After Crewman Falls Overboard
In a heartbreaking incident on February 27, 2016, a Navy dive team successfully retrieved the body of a man believed to be a Chinese crew member who fell overboard from the 'Mount Hikurangi' at the Port of Tauranga. The tragic fall occurred early in the morning when the individual plummeted approximately 10 meters into the harbor, failing to resurface by 9:21 a.m. near Berth 9. Emergency services were promptly notified, yet initial searches could not locate the missing crewman. It wasn't until around 12:20 p.m. that divers were able to find his body.
