Vessel Arrested in Chittagong Over Legal Dispute

Sep 26, 2019 13:24

On September 25, 2019, the cargo ship 'Costas L.' faced an unexpected arrest at the outer anchorage of Chittagong port. This measure was taken following a ruling from the local High Court dated September 23, linked to an ongoing legal dispute. The 'Costas L.', which was carrying a substantial cargo of 42,629 tonnes of clinker destined for the cement industry, had made its port call on September 8. After successfully offloading the clinker on October 1, the vessel awaited a release order. Fortunately for its crew and operators, the 'Costas L.' received the necessary clearance and was able to depart from Chittagong on October 2, 2019.

Minor Collision on the Mississippi River Involves Bulk Carrier

Mar 21, 2015 19:28

On March 20, 2015, at 7:40 a.m., a minor collision occurred on the Mississippi River involving the bulk carrier 'Heranger' and the vessel 'Costas L' at mile marker 89, near Chalmette, just outside New Orleans. The incident unfolded when 'Heranger', while attempting to enter an anchorage, experienced a power failure that caused it to drift. As it lost control, the ship's anchor became entangled in the mooring line of the 'Costas L', leading to the collision. Fortunately, the damage from the incident was reported to be minimal, and crucially, navigation on the river remained unaffected. The U.S. Coast Guard is currently conducting an investigation to further assess the circumstances surrounding the collision.

Pro-Union Demonstrators Disrupt Grain Carrier 'Mary H' at Port of Kalama

May 08, 2013 11:43

On May 7, 2013, at the Port of Kalama, nine vessels manned by supporters of the longshore union sought to obstruct the passage of the grain carrier 'Mary H'. Early in the morning, these protest boats positioned themselves near the terminal while a tugboat prepared to assist the 'Mary H' in its maneuvering. Tensions escalated when three protest boats encroached upon a designated 200-yard safety zone, prompting the Coast Guard to issue a warning to all mariners in the vicinity regarding the restrictions. In response, two Coast Guard teams from Portland boarded one of the protest boats to remind them of the safety regulations in place. Eventually, the protests subsided, and all nine boats departed the area. The 'Mary H' had initially docked in Vancouver, loading its cargo before heading to Kalama for an additional grain load. By the afternoon, the vessel was anchored on the Oregon bank of the Columbia River, officially marked as delayed. The protesters expressed their grievances, claiming the grain had been sourced from non-union workers in Vancouver, whom they labeled as strike breakers amidst an ILWU worker lockout. Although the protestors had been compliant with the safety zone until that day, May 7 witnessed a breach when three boats approached the 'Mary H'. In a cooperative effort, ILWU dockworkers have arranged to load grain from Kalama Export to the 'Mary H' on the morning of May 8, ensuring the cargo is distinctly separated by a plastic tarp. This measure aims to clearly identify which grain is loaded by union labor for future reference, particularly for union dockworkers in Japan, the ship's destination.
