MCT Altair Grounds in Kiel Canal, Prompting Emergency Response
On March 30, 2014, at around 5 a.m., the tanker MCT Altair found itself grounded in the Kiel Canal, specifically in the embankment at the Schwartenbek crossover near the Levensau Bridge. The vessel was traveling from Klaipeda to Baitumi and had just departed the locks in Kiel-Holtenau, heading west. In response to the emergency, the local tugs, Holtenau and Kitzeberg, were dispatched to assist in refloating the ship. Following successful operations, the tanker, which was carrying hazardous materials, was escorted back to the North Port in Kiel and securely moored at the Bominflot bunker pier around 3 p.m. for thorough inspections and investigations. By 8 p.m., MCT Altair was cleared and set off once again for its intended journey to Batumi. Tragic Incident Claims Life of Russian Engineer Aboard MCT Altair
In a tragic event on December 13, 2013, a Russian ship engineer lost his life following a fall on the MCT Altair, which was navigating the St. Lawrence River. At approximately 1:30 a.m., local law enforcement and the U.S. Coast Guard were alerted to a crew member's death at the Snell Lock of the St. Lawrence Seaway. Investigations revealed that the vessel's chief engineer fell roughly 10 feet from a staircase while on his way to the engine control room. Despite the crew's immediate attempts to perform life-saving procedures onboard, their efforts proved unsuccessful.
