Tanker 'Nikko' Grounds Off Dua Island Amid Severe Weather

Feb 04, 2026 12:45

On January 30, 2026, the tanker 'Nikko' encountered a significant incident as it ran aground near Dua Island, positioned at 00° 20' N 132° 09' E. The grounding was attributed to severe adverse weather, including intense winds and towering waves. The vessel had set sail from Jayapura Port on January 28, 2026, bound for Tarjun Port in Kalimantan, while transporting crude palm oil (CPO). At 5:25 a.m. WIT, the tanker altered its course from 270 degrees to 236 degrees; however, the ship remained on what was believed to be a safe trajectory. Unfortunately, at 5:40 a.m., 'Nikko' was struck by a large wave and an alum, compelling the vessel to lean towards port. Efforts to correct its course were hampered by the relentless winds and rough sea conditions. By 5:50 a.m., worsening weather conditions culminated in the ship running aground. The water depth around the vessel fluctuated between 4 and 5 meters at different parts of the ship, while the surrounding depth reduced to approximately two meters. Following the incident, the crew swiftly shut down the engine and conducted a detailed inspection to assess both the vessel's integrity and crew safety. Fortunately, there have been no reports of marine pollution stemming from this grounding. In response to the situation, the Class I KSOP Sorong promptly dispatched two tugboats to assist in refloating operations. Previous attempts had proven futile as the towline had snapped due to the persistent poor weather. Once successfully refloated, 'Nikko' is slated to be escorted to Wasior Port for evaluations by the Navy Inspector and the Indonesian Bureau of Classification (BKI), ensuring that the ship is deemed seaworthy before being towed back to Sorong. Subsequently, the crew will undergo medical examinations following the salvage operations.
