Maldives Gains $10 Million Compensation Following Navios Amaryllis Incident

Dec 06, 2021 21:16

The Maldives has been awarded a compensation sum of $10 million from the operators of the 'Navios Amaryllis' following its grounding on the Rasfari reef located in the Kaafu Atoll on August 19. An investigation conducted by the Environment Protection Agency determined that the incident was caused by the vessel's engine shutting down due to overheating, attributed to the negligence of the ship's master. This financial compensation is a significant step toward addressing the environmental impact resulting from the grounding and reinforces accountability in maritime operations.

Assessment Complete: Navios Amaryllis Grounding Impacts Coral Reef in Maldives

Sep 30, 2021 09:35

On September 26, the Director General of the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) announced the completion of an assessment regarding the environmental impact caused by the grounding of the MV Navios Amaryllis. Although the specific fine amount has yet to be disclosed, the EPA is set to impose penalties on the vessel based on the findings of a joint survey conducted by the Maldives National Defence Force (MNDF) and the EPA. The extensive survey wrapped up last week after a prolonged month, primarily hampered by challenging diving conditions due to severe surge waves. The grounding incident has severely impacted approximately one hectare of a protected marine area, damaging a variety of corals, including large brain corals and branching corals. Experts estimate that recovery of the reef could take up to a decade. The EPA will calculate the damages according to the provisions outlined in the Environment Protection Act, which governs penalties for such environmental violations. Fines for harming vulnerable ecosystems in the Maldives can reach a maximum of MVR 100 million (equivalent to USD 6,474,187). In addition to this fine, the EPA reserves the right to seek further financial compensation for the ecological damages incurred. Any imposed fines must be settled within 30 days for the vessel to be released. Currently, the Navios Amaryllis remains anchored in Maldivian waters, at position 04° 17.05' N, 073° 31.17' E, awaiting resolution on its financial liabilities.

Navios Amaryllys Owners Seek Clearance for Departure to Panama

Sep 03, 2021 10:47

The bulk carrier 'Navios Amaryllys' is eager to set sail from the Maldives following its successful refloat on August 29. As of September 3, the vessel remains under detention while investigations are ongoing. To facilitate its departure before the conclusion of the inquiry, the vessel's owners have been offered the option to pay a hefty deposit of MVR 100 million. The owners have formally expressed their desire to navigate to Panama, where necessary repairs for the damages sustained during grounding will be undertaken. However, discussions concerning the deposit payment with the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) have yet to take place.
