Detention of the Muse in Tuapse Highlights Maritime Safety Concerns

Sep 20, 2025 13:55

On September 15, 2025, the vessel 'Muse' faced detention in Tuapse due to an alarming total of ten significant deficiencies. The violations uncovered included serious structural integrity issues such as hull cracking and inadequate freeboard mark visibility. Additionally, the vessel did not meet the requirements concerning water and weathertightness of windows, sidescuttles, and deadlights. Fire safety protocols were also found wanting, with firefighting equipment not complying with necessary standards. Life-saving appliances were subpar, with lifebuoys failing to meet the required provisions and positioning. Pollution prevention measures were inadequate, specifically regarding the Ballast Water Management System. Furthermore, essential safety protocols regarding the handling of dangerous goods indicated a lack of proper personal protection measures. Compounding these issues, systems crucial to emergency operations, particularly emergency steering and compass reading, were reported inoperative. Navigational safety was compromised, as the vessel's voyage data recorder was not functioning as mandated. Alarmingly, the ISM (International Safety Management) certificate was also deemed unsatisfactory. Despite these numerous shortcomings, the 'Muse' was released from detention on September 17 and subsequently anchored off Tuapse at coordinates 45° 12' N, 028° 51' E as of September 20. This incident follows a previous detention on August 7, 2024, in Iskenderun, where the vessel faced eight deficiencies for a single day. The repeated infractions raise critical questions about maritime safety standards and compliance for the 'Muse'.
