Bulk Carrier Bobik Successfully Fends Off Pirate Assault in Bab el Mandeb Strait

Dec 05, 2025 23:59

On December 5, 2025, the bulk carrier Bobik, while journeying from Poti to Lianyungang, found itself under threat approximately 15 nautical miles from Yemen's coastline, pinpointed at position 12.726084 N 43.262100 E in the perilous Bab el Mandeb Strait. Reports indicate that around 15 small vessels approached the Bobik, which had armed security personnel on board. The initial assault was thwarted without any injuries, thanks to the defensive fire initiated after spotting the suspicious crafts, which eventually retreated from the vicinity. The ship's captain reassured that all crew members were unharmed and that the Bobik would continue its course towards the next destination while remaining vigilant. According to incident reports circulated by UK Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO), the Bobik was maintaining its speed and modifying its course at 03:32 UTC when it issued a distress alert, approximately 14 nautical miles west of Yemen. The security team aboard the vessel engaged in an exchange of gunfire after the initial approach of the small boats. A subsequent threat arose shortly after, involving two skiffs accompanied by a suspected mothership located several miles away. Interestingly, during this tense moment, another ship, the Globe Aliki, was transiting the same waters and was in proximity to the Bobik at 03:35 a.m. UTC. The crew onboard the Globe Aliki observed the small fishing-type crafts from a distance of about one nautical mile, noting that they did not appear to target their vessel. Prior to the incident, Automatic Identification System (AIS) data indicated that on December 3, 2025, at 5:55 p.m. UTC, the Bobik adjusted its AIS setting to indicate 'Armed Guard Onboard', showing foresight against potential threats. Then, on the fateful morning of the attack at 05:47 a.m. UTC, the vessel's status changed again, this time to 'Chinese Crew'.
