Engine Trouble Halts Traffic in Bug-Dnepr Canal

Oct 17, 2019 19:45

On the night of October 15, 2019, at 11:30 p.m., the bulk carrier 'Mallika Naree' encountered a significant engine malfunction while navigating the Bug-Dnepr Canal. The vessel was on its way from Nikolayev to Alexandria, transporting a substantial cargo of 28,600 tons of soy, when it suffered the failure. This incident caused the ship to anchor precariously within the narrow canal's fairway, effectively obstructing traffic. During repair efforts, the 'Mallika Naree' inadvertently turned 180 degrees. After four intense hours, the crew managed to restart the engine; however, due to its position, the vessel could not rotate properly. Instead, it completed its passage through the canal by moving astern, assisted by tugboats. Successfully emerging into the Black Sea, the 'Mallika Naree' continued its journey, with an estimated time of arrival set for October 19.

Bulk Carrier 'Mallika Naree' Runs Aground in Norfolk, Virginia

Jun 30, 2017 09:15

On June 29, 2017, the US Coast Guard took action after the bulk carrier 'Mallika Naree' (IMO: 9354739) ran aground while navigating the Elizabeth River near Sewells Point, Norfolk, Virginia. The vessel, carrying a load of cement and steel and manned by a crew of 26, experienced a loss of propulsion at approximately 12:50 p.m. As a result, it collided with buoy #5 and subsequently became grounded outside the navigation channel. In response to the emergency, Coast Guard watchstanders at the Sector Hampton Roads Command Center in Portsmouth swiftly deployed a 45-foot boat and a 29-foot boat from Coast Guard Station Portsmouth. Around 1:00 p.m., the Coast Guard Aids to Navigation Team Hampton Roads also launched a boat crew to assist in the situation. An MH-60 Jayhawk helicopter team from the Coast Guard Air Station in Elizabeth City, North Carolina, was redirected at 1:20 p.m. for an aerial evaluation of the area. Additionally, personnel from the Virginia Marine Resources Commission and Norfolk Fire Department were instrumental on-site. Fortunately, no pollution was reported, nor were there any injuries among the crew. The vessel remained stable and did not take on water during the incident. Subsequently, towing services successfully refloated the 'Mallika Naree' and transported it to a nearby anchorage in the Elizabeth River, ensuring it is safely anchored under the supervision of the tug 'Surrie Moran' (IMO: 9239707).
