Emergency Response to Leaking Cargo Vessel Near Tarbert
On September 16, 2018, at 06:22 hours, the Stornoway RNLI lifeboat, 'Tom Sanderson,' swiftly launched a rescue operation after receiving a distress call from the Stornoway Coastguard regarding the cargo ship 'Fame.' The vessel was reportedly taking on water south of Tarbert, Harris, following a grounding incident while traveling from Mallaig to Harris, laden with salmon feed pellets. The incident occurred in East Loch Tarbert during the early hours of the morning. The alarm prompted the tugboat 'Orcadia' to depart from its berth on the nearby Scalpay Island to aid the stranded vessel. The Stornoway lifeboat made best speed towards the scene, arriving soon after the 'Fame' was secured at the CalMac pier in Tarbert, with the 'Orcadia' providing support. In response to the unfolding situation, the Maritime and Coastguard Agency (MCA) instructed the CalMac ferry 'Hebrides' to leave the port in order to accommodate the 'Fame’s' safe berthing; however, this caused a temporary halt in the ferry's operations in Tarbert. Assistance was also provided by the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service, Coastguard Rescue Teams, and a fish farm support vessel. The fish farm vessel played a crucial role by transferring a portable pump onto the compromised cargo ship. With a combination of this pump and the vessel’s onboard pumps, the team was able to manage the water accumulation effectively. A local diving company also contributed by alleviating the water flow, allowing time for a more durable repair to be organized. Once the situation stabilized and the vessel's own pumps were handling the water ingress efficiently, the 'Tom Sanderson' lifeboat was released and returned to its station. Subsequently, the 'Fame' entered the Alisa Shipyard in Troon Harbour on September 23 at 1:10 p.m. for necessary repairs, marking the conclusion of this emergency response operation.
Freighter FAME Experiences Bottom Contact Incident in The Minch Strait
In a significant maritime incident, the general cargo vessel FAME struck the seabed early on September 16, resulting in a breach that allowed water to enter the ship. This event occurred in The Minch strait, situated south of Tarbert on Harris, in the Western Isles of Scotland. The situation was promptly managed as the vessel was secured at Tarbert. The emergency response included the Stornoway lifeboat, the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service, Coastguard Rescue Teams, and a fish farm support boat, all of whom worked diligently to control the water ingress. At the time of the latest updates, as of 00:00 UTC on September 18, FAME remained anchored at Tarbert, having been en route to Mallaig, UK when the incident unfolded.
Heroic Rescue Operation for Cargo Ship 'Fame' in North Atlantic Waters
On December 14, 2017, a dramatic rescue operation unfolded in the North Atlantic as the cargo ship 'Fame' (IMO: 9751222) faced an engine failure near the Isle of Lewis. The vessel, carrying essential salmon feed, reported a loss of power at approximately 5:30 p.m. Amid the chaos, the emergency tug 'Ievoli Black' (IMO: 9439242), based in Kirkwall, was dispatched to provide critical assistance. With a crew of five aboard the 'Fame', help quickly arrived in the form of two lifeboats from Stornoway and Leverburgh, alongside a Stornoway Coastguard helicopter which stood ready for potential evacuation. Despite challenging conditions, including gale-force winds and swells reaching eight meters, the crew opted to stay aboard their vessel, deploying both anchors to stabilize it against drifting. By early December 15, the 'Ievoli Black' had successfully established a tow. Plans were made for the cargo ship's journey to Stornoway, located six miles from the Isle of Harris, with expectations of arrival by the morning of December 16. This resilient response showcases the commitment of maritime services in safeguarding lives and cargo at sea.
