Container Ship 'Shahraz' Grounds Near Sambu Island; Bulk Carrier Refloated
In a recent maritime incident, the Islamic Republic of Iran Shipping Lines (IRISL) confirmed that their container vessel, 'Shahraz', ran aground in the waters north of Indonesia, specifically close to Sambu Island. The shipping company clarified that the incident did not involve a collision with the Indonesia-flagged bulk carrier, 'Samudra Sakti I', which had also grounded in the same vicinity on May 12. The grounding of 'Shahraz' occurred while it was navigating the Strait of Singapore due to technical issues. IRISL assured that the situation is under control, implementing necessary measures to prevent environmental pollution and to refloat the ship, with losses covered by reputable international insurance policies. On June 3, rescue operations were enhanced with the assistance of Singapore Salvage Engineers, who deployed the crane barge 'SSE Jerome' alongside the vessel. At the time of the incident, the 'Shahraz' was en route from Port Klang to Shanghai, while the 'Samudra Sakti I' was making its way from Belawan to Bayah. The bulk carrier was successfully refloated and transported to an anchorage for inspection. As of June 3, the vessel has been moored at Samarinda Anchorage, positioned at 01° 6.11' S and 117° 13.16' E since 2 a.m.
Collision Leads to Grounding of Two Ships in Batam Waters
On May 11, 2020, at approximately 2 a.m., a maritime incident unfolded in the Strait of Singapore, specifically in the Batu Batu Waters near Sambu Island, Batam, Riau Islands. The container ship 'Sharaz' and the bulk carrier 'Samudra Sakti' collided and subsequently ran aground. Just prior to the incident, the port operations control center in Singapore had warned both vessels about the potential risk of grounding; however, this crucial alert appeared to have gone unheeded. Both ships had altered their navigational paths to avoid a tugboat when the grounding incident occurred. The Directorate General of Sea Transportation along with the Ministry of Transportation promptly deployed two patrol boats, KN 'Kalimashada - P 115' and KN 'P 112 - Sarotama' to the scene after receiving notifications from Batam Vessel Traffic Service (VTS). The rescue team arrived at the site by 4:45 a.m. and worked closely with various maritime agencies, including VTS Batam, KSOP Tanjung Balai Karimun, and Batam Special KSOP. Additional support arrived with several vessels including 'RB 209 - Tanjungpinang', 'RIB 03 - Batam', 'KN. Kalimasada', 'KN. Sarotama', as well as multiple KNP patrol boats. The 'Sharaz', which had departed from Port Klang at 8:50 a.m. on May 10, was en route to Yangshan when it became stuck with a 4° list to portside near the Batu Stop beacon at coordinates 01°11'25"N-103°52'854"E. Meanwhile, the 'Samudra Sakti,' which had sailed from Belawan on May 9 at 11:40 a.m. and was heading to Bayah with an expected arrival on May 14, ended up grounded at position 01°11'097"N-103°52'905"E. The 'Samudra Sakti I' was eventually refloated at 4 p.m. on the same day and transported to Batam Anchorage for mooring. In stark contrast, the 'Sharaz' remained aground, sustaining visible damage including dents amidships where the collision occurred. The hull exhibited vertical cracks on both sides throughout the freeboard and below the waterline, raising concerns about the vessel's structural integrity.
