Mysterious Disappearance of 609-Foot Ship Follows Tragic Death of Tampa Longshoreman

Nov 05, 2015 08:15

On October 23, 2012, a devastating accident occurred on the deck of a 609-foot vessel docked at Port Tampa Bay, resulting in the untimely death of longshoreman Gilmore, 56. During routine operations, rigging that was hoisting 2 tons of piping above him unexpectedly failed, leading Gilmore to leap to safety. Tragically, he fell 15 feet into the ship's hold as the cargo crashed down, resulting in fatal injuries. In the wake of this incident, the Honesty Ocean departed from Tampa's waters and has not returned, a development that raises questions for Gilmore’s family and legal representatives. Attorneys representing Gilmore’s widow believe there may be a connection between the ship's sudden disappearance and the negligence lawsuit they filed in federal court last year. Recently, the widow has also initiated a suit in Hillsborough Circuit Court. Jo Ann Gilmore, 61, of St. Petersburg, has been informed by her attorney that the lifting sling used during her husband’s accident was severely worn and not fit for carrying heavy loads. Gilmore's husband was also the pastor of the Divine Worship House of God in St. Petersburg. Lawyer David Pope, who is handling the case, speculates that the ship’s owners—believed to be based in China—are possibly attempting to escape legal responsibilities. In international waters, accountability can be difficult to trace, making it a challenging environment for those seeking justice. Gilmore’s tragic story serves as a reminder of the perils faced by maritime workers and the complexities involved in seeking accountability on the high seas.

Tragic Incident Aboard the Honesty Ocean: One Fatality and One Injury in Steel Pipe Collapse

Oct 24, 2012 09:37

In a tragic accident at the Port of Tampa on October 23, 2012, a shipment of steel pipes onboard the cargo vessel "Honesty Ocean" resulted in the death of a St. Petersburg man and serious injuries to a colleague. The incident occurred in the afternoon when a bundle of 4-inch steel pipes, being prepared for lifting by crane, collapsed after a strap gave way, striking four stevedores from the International Longshoremen's Association who were working on deck. The injured man, a Tampa resident, was transported to Tampa General Hospital with injuries that were reported as non-life threatening. Sadly, the accident claimed the life of one worker. Emergency services were alerted at around 4 p.m. and quickly dispatched to berth 201, where the "Honesty Ocean" was docked after arriving from Houston. During the operation, the workers were managing multiple bundles, typically weighing a ton each, when the straps failed, sending a heavy bundle crashing down onto the deck, the dock, and back into the ship’s cargo hold. The chaotic nature of the collapse created an unstable work environment, complicating rescue efforts. Authorities from the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) have been notified and are likely to conduct an investigation into the incident. Two other crew members present at the scene fortunately escaped without injury.
