On March 1, 2013, the transit of the 'BBC Thames' through the Kiel Canal experienced an unexpected delay due to an accident involving a pilot. The incident occurred around 2 p.m. when the pilot, a 36-year-old man, fell into the lock at Holtenau while navigating the middle wall in preparation to board the vessel. The fall from a height of four meters onto wooden fenderings necessitated a swift response from the local fire brigade. The pilot was successfully rescued and subsequently transported to a Kiel hospital, where he was admitted to intensive care for treatment. Following the incident, the 'BBC Thames', which had originally entered the lock at 1:47 a.m., was able to resume its journey from Antwerp to Norrköping at approximately 3:30 p.m.
