On May 31, 2024, during the afternoon hours, the Greek Coast Guard's Maritime Rescue Coordination Center (MRCC) received a distress signal regarding a migrant vessel stranded 29 nautical miles south of Gavdos. Responding to the emergency, the bulk carrier 'Navin Hawk', which was on a journey from Damietta to Rouen, promptly altered its course to assist. The crew of the 'Navin Hawk' successfully rescued all 37 individuals aboard the distressed craft. After the rescue operation, the migrants were transferred to a coast guard patrol boat, ensuring their safe passage to Tigani port in Paleochora. They were subsequently taken to a temporary accommodation facility at the port of Souda.
