On April 5, 2016, the AMVER vessels 'Brilliant Jupiter' and 'Ten Yu Maru' sprang into action after receiving an emergency call from the Sector Guam Command Center. At 11:07 a.m., watchstanders were alerted by a Chuuk search and rescue liaison about a skiff that had gone overdue on its journey to Weno Island. In a coordinated effort, the watchstanders issued an urgent marine information broadcast and collaborated with a Navy P-8 aircrew, as well as other vessels in the vicinity of the skiff’s last reported location. On April 7 at 6 a.m., the Navy P-8 aircrew, known as Madfox 807 and stationed at Misawa Air Base in Japan, commenced their search operations. Remarkably, just two hours into the flight, the crew located the three missing men after they used palm fronds to craft a large SOS signal in the sand. The stranded sailors had managed to survive for three long days on an uninhabited Pacific island. Upon being spotted, they were found holding life jackets and desperately signaling for help. The information regarding the survivors was promptly relayed back to the search and rescue teams in Guam, allowing them to inform the relatives of the men. Subsequently, the rescued crew was picked up and transported by a local small boat to Pulap, where they could finally receive the care they needed after their harrowing ordeal.
