Bulk Carrier 'Nea Tyhi' Collides with Zarate Oil Pier, Causing Significant Damage
On November 25, 2018, at 11:24 a.m., the bulk carrier 'Nea Tyhi' experienced a blackout while navigating the River Paraná, resulting in a collision with the VITCO oil pier at the Zarate port complex. At the time of the incident, the vessel was en route downstream from San Lorenzo to Bahia Blanca, transporting a substantial load of 50,000 metric tonnes of soybean seeds from the ADM berth. The allision inflicted severe damage on the wharf and its cargo handling equipment, leading to a nearly complete destruction of the structure. The 'Nea Tyhi' also sustained damage to its portside bow. Following the accident, the bulk carrier was directed by the Prefecture to anchor at river kilometer 120 following the incident, which suspended navigation in the area due to the collapsed pier and its supporting dolphins. As of November 27, the vessel remained at anchor, positioned at coordinates 34° 1.38' W 059° 6.95' S.
