Emergency Medical Evacuation Near Grömitz: Crew Member Rescued from Ferry
On November 14, 2020, a dramatic medevac operation took place off the coast of Grömitz involving the ferry 'Urd'. A 51-year-old Latvian crew member sustained a serious head injury after a fall on board, prompting immediate medical assistance. The ferry was traveling from Travemünde to Liepaja when the ship's captain alerted the Maritime Rescue Coordination Centre (MRCC) in Bremen at 6:45 PM, while situated approximately 15 nautical miles east of Grömitz. The 'Hans Hackmack', a lifeboat from the German Maritime Search and Rescue Service (DGzRS), along with an aircraft from Northern Helicopter (NHC), were swiftly dispatched to assist in the emergency. As the ferry changed course to meet the lifeboat, the two vessels rendezvoused about 19 miles offshore in the Mecklenburger Bight. Despite SE winds blowing at 3 Beaufort and minimal swell of 0.4 meters, the crew of the 'Hans Hackmack' successfully boarded the ferry. Two crew members equipped with emergency medical supplies were able to stabilize the injured sailor and prepare him for a safe hoisting operation. Using a stretcher, rescuers lifted the victim aboard the helicopter where he received urgent medical care before being transported to the hospital. The 'Urd' resumed its journey to Liepaja, successfully docking on November 15.
